A Drawing a Day

A Drawing a Day

ARTIST STATEMENT

Architectural landscapes are the foundations for my drawings. The structures I use for inspiration are often weathered, in stages of decay or even in ruins. I use photography, fading memories, as well as my imagination to create my compositions. By layering thousands of charcoal marks and eraser strokes, I try to capture the subtlety of cracking stucco, broken walls, narrow alleys, exposed bricks, dripping roofs, and winding staircases which are all recurring elements in my drawings. Through my process, I get a chance to revisit, rediscover and recreate places I find intriguing, beautiful, empty and forlorn. I draw these places as what they have become over time, but I wonder how they came to be this way and what they will evolve into with time and the impact that both people and the elements will have on them. I hope that my drawings will give people the sense of having experienced a place through someone else’s eyes, as well as arising the same queries I pondered while confronted by the actuality of these places in person.
